Doane Robinson, South Dakota’s state historian, inspired the carving on Mount Rushmore. Funding was always an issue, and the directive was to just stick with the four faces. One Borglum design envisioned the presidential figures as individual statues. Danish-born sculptor Gutzon Borglum's original vision of the monumental Mount Rushmore figures was very different from the carving as it stands today. Borglum continued to touch up his work at Mount Rushmore until he died suddenly in 1941. Borglum had originally hoped to also carve a series of inscriptions into the mountain, outlining the history of the United States.

Borglum's head of Lee was removed when another artist was engaged and none of his work survived when the carving was finally finished in 1970.
